How to Create Seamless Indoor/Outdoor Living Spaces

Warm weather is officially here for most people, which means that during their time away from work and other responsibilities, it’s the ideal opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. One of the best ways to love being outside is to tie your indoor and outdoor living spaces together in a seamless way. You want your indoor living areas to feel like they’re a continuation of your outdoor spaces.

When you’re able to accomplish that, it can make your entire home fill brighter and more open.

Some of the ways to create seamless outdoor/indoor living spaces may require some larger projects, while other ways can be as simple as the décor you choose.

The following are some tips that can serve as a useful starting point.

Design a Structured Furniture Layout

Your goal with your outdoor living space to make it feel like just that—a place to live. A few haphazard lounge chairs aren’t going to create a feeling of warmth and a place that seems like it’s perfect for encouraging conversation.

Instead, you want to have a structure in your outdoor living spaces that’s similar to what you have indoors. You want to ensure that each area has a purpose, for example, cooking or entertaining and that the purpose is apparent in the layout of the furniture.

Consider the Architectural Style of Your Home

If you want seamlessness in your design of both indoor and outdoor areas, make sure you think about the overall architectural design and style of your home. You want to make sure that both you indoor and outdoor areas work well the architecture of your entire home for cohesiveness.

Keep Sight Lines Clear

When you’re in your indoor living room, you want to be able to see outdoors and vice versa. That not only brings the two spaces together but it also makes sure your home is bright and airy. To manage this, keep windows unobstructed. If you do use blinds, make sure they can also be adjusted to reveal outdoor areas and avoid heavy curtains or window coverings that block the outdoor light and views.

Unify Spaces Through Flooring

If you’re open to doing some construction or larger projects, you might think about choosing flooring that can be used in both the indoors or outdoors. If you are choosing versatile flooring for use indoors and outdoors, make sure you choose a durable, slip-resistant material that will withstand the elements. If you have a covered patio or outdoor area, having flooring extend from the indoors to the outdoors tends to work best.

Maintain a Similar Design Aesthetic

You want your overall design aesthetic including furniture styles and color palettes to remain somewhat similar as your home moves from the indoors to the outside, so keep this in mind in both areas. If the interior of your home is traditional, for example, try to maintain a traditional design style outdoors.

Creating seamless transitions from the indoors to the outdoors is the perfect way to maximize the usable space in your home, while also making sure everything has plenty of natural light and flows in an optimal way.
